UNION 2, SOUNDERS 3: Almost immediately after McGlynn’s goal, Daniel Gazdag cut the deficit to one.

UNION 1, SOUNDERS 3: Jack McGlynn scored early in the second half to cut the deficit to two.

UNION 0, SOUNDERS 3: Raúl Ruidíaz converted from the spot, scoring yet again on a Panenka. The foul was drawn by Obed Vargas, who was taken down in the box by Olivier Mbaizo.

UNION 0, SOUNDERS 2: Obed Vargas scored his first professional goal, bending in a shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 22nd minute. Just a minute or so earlier, Vargas got his elbow up on Daniel Gazdag and was a little lucky to have not been red-carded.

UNION 0, SOUNDERS 1: Raúl Ruidíaz picked up a mishandled pass near midfield and alertly caught Union goalkeeper Oliver Semmle off his line to score from about 50 yards out.

LINEUPS: Yeimar Gomez Andrade will replace Xavier Arreaga in the starting lineup while Albert Rusnák and João Paulo were added to the bench with Danny Musovski also out with injury. The Union had three changes to the starting lineup with the most notable being Julian Carranza who actually required the use of a substitute. He is joined by goalkeeper Oliver Semmle and Jakob Glesnes as new additions.

As you may remember, way back on March 9 the Seattle Sounders paid a visit to the Philadelphia Union. It was raining. A lot. And it only got heavier as the game crept closer to kickoff.

By the time the match actually started, there was standing water. Just five minutes in, the game was paused and groundskeepers did everything they could to clear the field, including running big squeegies across it. It continued to rain. A lot. After about 30 minutes, the game was finally called off.

Well, not “called off” as much as it was delayed. In a perfect world, the teams would have picked up where they left off the next day. But the Union were already scheduled to board a plane for Mexico to play in Concacaf Champions Cup, which meant the game had to be delayed indefinitely.

Eventually, it was rescheduled for April 30. That’s today! And we’re now finally ready to resume the game.

Theoretically, everything is supposed to be just as it was then. Same lineups, same rosters, etc. But the reality is there are several players for both teams who aren’t available. If you’re really interested in diving into all that, you can read about it here. For the purposes of today, the big thing to know is that Xavier Arreaga is the only Sounders starter who isn’t available; he’s likely to be replaced by Yeimar Gomez Andrade, who was on the bench that day.

Notes

  • The Sounders are off to their worst-ever start, sitting just 1-5-3 through nine games. A win today would push them ahead of the 2018 team’s pace, however.
  • The Union were the last undefeated team in MLS until this past weekend, when they lost to Real Salt Lake. They are 3-1-4.
