Sounders vs. CF Montreal gamethread

The Sounders continue their quest for the first win of the season.

The Seattle Sounders will be looking to snap a five-game, season-opening winless streak when they host CF Montreal today. This ties the worst-ever start to a Sounders season through five games. In 2013, the Sounders followed up their five-game winless run with a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1).

This should be as healthy as the Sounders have been all season, likely marking the first time that all 11 starters will be playing positions in which they train extensively. Obed Vargas is the latest player to return from injury, having missed the last two games while in concussion protocol.

Montreal will be closing out a season-opening, six-game road trip. They went 2-0-1 in the first three, but have lost their last two.

Notes

  • Among MLS teams who have visited Lumen Field at least twice, CF Montreal are the only club with a winning record (3-1-0). They won their previous trip here in 2022, 2-1. Montreal is 6-2-1 against the Sounders, overall.
  • Since 2009, no Western Conference team has accumulated more points against Eastern Conference opponents than the Sounders’ 245.
  • The Sounders have only scored one goal from open play (Danny Musovski), but have four goals overall.
  • James Riley, the current head coach of Ballard FC, will be honored before the match as part of the Sounders’ 50th Anniversary celebrations.
