Ship's Log, Nov. 10: Cementing legacies
No other American soccer city has two teams left alive in pro soccer playoffs.
There's never been a double-dip of champions for NWSL and MLS play. Both leagues have a high level of parity. Only Seattle has won the MLS and NWSL shields in the same year (2014) and only Portland has experienced both of their top teams making the final in the same year, but both lost their respective 2018 finals.
Even qualifying for the second season with both clubs is rare. In 2022 no city had the experience.
We have the opportunity to capture a rare and thrilling double in Seattle. Despite both teams have long periods of struggle, the season can wind up with the thrill of parades and trophies.
And, we'd experience this thrill while some of the greatest to ever play in their leagues are done in Seattle.
Together as one – a city united in soccer excellence.
Let's send off two legends with trophies.
As Megan Rapinoe heads off to Phase 2 of her career, she has the opportunity to do what so few do. She and Reign can finally take the Cup, the trophy they haven't chased down. She call's this opportunity the "perfect way to go out."
The better way is with a win.
It's the best way to send Nico Lodeiro off as well. A final trophy goes a long way towards healing emotional wounds.
