Seattle shut out from Copa America 2024

Seattle’s Lumen Field was not selected to be one of the hosts for the Copa America 2024, after all. CONMEBOL made that official when they revealed the 14 host stadiums on Monday, choosing to skip the Pacific Northwest entirely.

There had been much speculation that the tournament would be a sort of dry run for the 2026 World Cup, but the organizing committee opted for more of a hybrid that also included several smaller soccer-specific stadiums. In the end, 5 of the 14 stadiums selected were not part of the World Cup bid. Perhaps more surprising was the selection of both Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. and Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Meanwhile, the entire West Coast will be served by Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium and Arizona's State Farm Stadium also making the cut.

It was not immediately clear how hard Seattle campaigned to be a host or what, if any, accommodations they'd have been asked to make. When the Copa America Centenario came to Seattle in 2016, temporary grass was rolled out and generally got positive reviews; six of the stadiums selected for this edition normally have artificial turf.
