While it appears the sale of OL Reign is still inching toward completion, the club took an important step forward on Tuesday – announcing its return to the club's original name, Seattle Reign FC, and original crest, which was considered the best in the league before the brand refresh under OL Groupe ownership.
The move was announced on social media with a video that paid tribute to the club's roots in Seattle, its fans, and the players – past and present – who make this club so special. "The restoration has begun, Seattle," the club said in the post.
The updated crest has a slightly different color palette, with gold replacing the gray but the blue and dark blue/black tones from the original logo remaining. According to the club, the new shade of gold – called Seattle Reign Gold – symbolizes the club's league-leading three NWSL Shields.
“Today is the start of a new chapter for our unique club, fans and community,” said Seattle Reign CEO Vincent Berthillot. “Bringing back the club’s original name and identity from the 2013 season as the club prepares to enter a new era is our way of honoring the history of this club while respecting the progress and success we’ve experienced firsthand. Seattle Reign FC was a founding club in this growing league, and our OGs, our supporters and our community have remained by our side from the very beginning to help pave the way for the future.”
The name Seattle Reign FC was used throughout the club’s first six seasons of play at Starfire Stadium (2013) and Memorial Stadium (2014-2018). The club changed to Reign FC when it moved to Tacoma in 2019, and then became OL Reign after being purchased by Olympique Lyonnais Groupe in 2020.
Seattle Reign FC merchandise is already available for preorder at www.reignfcshop.com. While the sale is not yet complete, Sounder at Heart continues to hear that things are progressing well and should be finalized soon.
The crest is also available in several alternate color schemes – adding two new colors, Diffused Blue (light blue) and Seattle Reign Sesame (beige), to the mix.
