Philadelphia Union vs. Sounders: Postponed

MATCH POSTPONED: After a lengthy delay and no letup in the conditions, the game was officially postponed. No date has been determined for rescheduling it.

RAIN DELAY: After five minutes or so of playing in significant standing water, the referee stopped play. They then spent about 15 minutes deciding what to do before calling for a 30-minute delay.

The Seattle Sounders come into today’s game against the Philadelphia Union looking for their first win of the season and having failed to score a goal from open play in either of their first two matches.

The Union, meanwhile, are coming off a 0-0 draw in their Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 match against Pachuca last Tuesday, with the return leg in Mexico looming next Tuesday.

The expectation is that the Union’s main focus will be on CCC, which means there should be some significant rotation. Among the players who didn’t feature in that game was Julian Carranza, Philly's leading scorer from last season. He’s been dealing with a muscle injury that could keep him out of this one, too.

They won’t get much sympathy from the Sounders, who are going to be missing at least four starters. João Paulo, Pedro de la Vega, Albert Rusnák and Stefan Frei have all been ruled out of this game, while Yeimar Gomez Andrade is only expected to be available off the bench.

Notes

  • The Sounders are 0-3-3 all-time on the road in the regular season at Subaru Park, one of only two venues they’ve visited at least three times and never won in. They did, however, win the 2014 U.S. Open Cup there against the Union. Across all competitions, the Sounders have gone 5-5-3 against the Union.
  • The Sounders will once again be missing several starters to injury. The latest player to join the ranks of injured Sounders is Pedro de la Vega, who will be out 6-8 weeks after injuring his hamstring.
  • The Sounders registered seven wins on the road last season, the third most in all of MLS.
  • Sounders right back Alex Roldan made his 100th regular-season start for the Sounders last week.
