The Seattle Sounders’ road match against the Columbus Crew that was originally scheduled for June 1 has been moved to Sept. 7, a Saturday that comes during a FIFA international window. The Crew will be playing Pachuca in the Concacaf Champions Cup final on June 1.
Although playing through an international window is hardly ideal, this does allow both teams some breathing room during what is already a very busy part of the schedule.
If the game had been played as scheduled, the Sounders would have potentially been playing their 11th game in a 36-day span. Instead, the new date falls with basically a week of rest on either side. The Sounders play at the Portland Timbers on Aug. 31 and host Sporting KC on Sept. 15.
The Crew are also more likely to be impacted by international duty, having had five players called up during the last window. The Sounders did not have any players called up during that window.
