LINEUPS: Cristian Roldan and Nouhou effectively replace Alex Roldan and Josh Atencio as first-team regulars in the lineup, with Jackson Ragen also moving onto the bench. Otherwise this is, again, a very reserve- and Tacoma Defiance-heavy roster.
The Seattle Sounders can take another step toward becoming the first MLS team to win five U.S. Open Cups with a win tonight against reigning USL Championship winners Phoenix Rising. For all their success in the tournament, however, this would mark the furthest the Sounders have advanced since making the quarterfinals in 2016. Phoenix Rising has never advanced beyond the Round of 16, nor have they beaten an MLS opponent.
The Sounders are expected to use another heavily rotated lineup, albeit with some MLS veterans sprinkled in. Nouhou is among the projected starters as he won’t be available for Saturday’s match against St. Louis City after getting red-carded against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Notes
- Tacoma Defiance players Snyder Brunell, Osaze De Rosario, Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, Antino Lopez and Georgi Minoungou are all available for selection after signing short-term agreements.
- The Sounders are 24-1-3 in Open Cup games at Starfire Stadium dating to 2005.
- A draw that determines the pairings for the quarterfinals and semifinals will be held at 7 PM and streamed on US Soccer’s YouTube page.

Editor’s note: We’re quite aware of the issues we’ve been having with comments failing to load in gamethreads, especially when we’re at peak action. We’ve been deploying a series of fixes and are continuing to try other things. In simple terms, our servers are getting overloaded. Unfortunately, it looks like we might be running out of options short of spending significantly more money to expand our capacity. As we’re now a self-funded operation, we have limited resources and the prospects of something like this paying for itself are not very high. While aware this might not be a solution for everyone, I did want to offer one that might be attractive to some of you: Join our Discord. Yes, this still means you need to be subscribing at the Supporter ($75/year) level or above, but I suspect some of you already are. If that’s the case, just shoot us an email and we’ll get you squared away. If you’re not already subscribing at that level, consider this an invitation.
