Sounders vs. Whitecaps: Gamethread
SOUNDERS 1, WHITECAPS 0: Jordan Morris scored his second goal of the season, left-footing a rebound from an Obed Vargas shot.
LINEUPS: The Sounders are going with the closest thing they’ve had to a full-strength lineup, with the twist of Obed Vargas at right mid and Cristian Roldan next to João Paulo. Pedro de la Vega and Reed Baker-Whiting are also available off the bench.
It’s still too early to call any match a literal must-win, but this match against the Vancouver Whitecaps is pretty darn close. The Sounders currently sit on 13 points through 13 games, with just six of those coming in their five home games. Simply put, the Sounders need to start collecting points at home.
Although these two teams just met about a month ago, their respective fortunes have been going in opposite directions. The Sounders have won 2 of 4 league games in that time, while the Whitecaps have now gone four straight without a win. Once fighting for a top spot in the Western Conference, the Whitecaps are now sitting seventh and just five points ahead of the Sounders.
This match will likely mark the return of Pedro de la Vega, who is expected to feature off the bench. It will be his first appearance since Week 2 when he went down with a hamstring injury.
Notes
- The Whitecaps currently lead the Cascadia Cup standings with six points in two games. The Sounders are second with three points in two games.
- The Sounders’ 17 regular-season wins against the Whitecaps since 2011 is their second most against any opponent.
- Kelyn Rowe will be honored before the match.
