The Seattle Reign FC are officially, finally, entering a new era.

Seattle Sounders FC and Carlyle Group now own the NWSL club, and Maya Mendoza-Exstrom has been appointed as Chief Business Officer, overseeing the club’s day-to-day operations. Before the Reign faced rivals Portland Thorns FC on Sunday in a scoreless draw, Mendoza-Exstrom spoke with Ride of the Valkyries about moving over to the Reign and how this ownership change can translate into true growth for the club off the field to match their quest for success on the field.

“I’m super excited. That’s the tone and tenor for me, for everyone inside of the ownership group and working closely with Lesle and Laura [Reign General Manager Lesle Gallimore and head coach Laura Harvey],” said Medoza-Exstrom. “I think there’s this genuine excitement and hopefully it doesn’t abate for a really long time. It’s probably a long time coming, probably an inevitability in some people’s mind, probably a ‘never gonna happen’ in other people’s minds, but just a really unique opportunity now to go forward together under one enterprise with these two clubs.”
