Josh Atencio makes Olympics debut
Josh Atencio made a bit of Seattle Sounders history when he played for the United States in their 3-0 win over Guinea on Tuesday to qualify for the Olympic men's soccer quarterfinals. It is the first time since 2000 that the United States men have advanced to the knockout stage of the Olympics.
Prior to Atencio’s 38-minute performance, the only active Sounder to play in the Olympics was Mario Martinez, who played for Honduras in 2012. At the time, he had completed his transfer to the Sounders, but had not yet suited up for them. Patrick Ianni (2008), Mauro Rosales (2004) and Kasey Keller (1996) all played in the Olympics before joining the Sounders.
“It’s good for him, it’s good for us,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said after being informed of Atencio’s appearance. “It’s a proud moment for the club, good for Josh’s confidence.”
Atencio had originally been named as an alternate to the USA’s roster, but got his chance after Gianluca Busio suffered a lower-leg injury in the previous game. The 22-year-old was solid, if unspectacular in his time. He completed 10 of 11 passes, had two passes into the final third was credited with four defensive actions and had four recoveries. He was also 2 of 5 on duels.
It was not immediately clear if Atencio will get another chance when the United States plays Morocco in the quarterfinals on Friday. Morocco won Group B by beating Argentina 2-1 and Iraq 3-0, while losing to Ukraine 2-1.
