SOUNDERS 1, ST. LOUIS 0: The Sounders got out to a lead after Tim Parker scored an own-goal off an Alex Roldan cross.
LINEUPS: Jon Bell moves into the starting lineup as Yeimar Gomez-Andrade gets some rest after three straight starts, while Pedro de la Vega is available off the bench.
The Seattle Sounders are suddenly one of the hottest teams in MLS, coming into tonight’s match against St. Louis City riding a five-game winning streak and seven-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. That includes a four-game home winning streak and a record of 6-1-3 in their last 10 league games.
For all that work, though, the Sounders are still seventh in the Western Conference, albeit now just four points out of fourth with a game in hand on the Colorado Rapids.
St. Louis City is going in the opposite direction. They are 1-8-3 in their last 12, which includes a 2-1 loss at home to the Sounders toward the start of this stretch. Along the way, that run of form cost head coach Bradley Carnell his job, with John Hackworth filling in as the interim.
The biggest issue for St. Louis is having given up 26 goals in their past 11 matches, among the worst in the league. Only the San Jose Earthquakes have allowed more goals in that time. St. Louis is also in a bit of an injury crisis, as they’re currently without potential starters Rasmus Alm, João Klauss, Tomáš Ostrák and Célio Pompeu, while centerback Joakim Nilsson is questionable with a hamstring injury.
Notes
- St. Louis has scored an own-goal in each of their previous three matches against the Sounders. No other team in MLS history has managed to do that against the same opponent more than twice.
- The Sounders won all three of those games by a collective score of 7-1, including a 2-1 win earlier this year in St. Louis.
- Stefan Frei picked up his 111th career shutout on Saturday, moving him one away from tying Kevin Hartman for second on the all-time list.
- Former NASL and A-League Sounder Chance Fry will be honored pregame as part of the Sounders’ 50th anniversary celebration.
