The Tacoma Defiance lost in regulation for the first time in two months on Sunday, falling 2-1 to Real Monarchs SLC. The Defiance got off to a sluggish start and quickly found themselves trailing 1-0, but then equalized through Chris Aquino late in the first half and nearly grabbed another before halftime. But Monarchs scored an early second-half goal and then saw it out to end a four-game winless run.
Highlights
Key performers
Chris Aquino: The 18-year-old continued his hot form, scoring his fifth goal in four games and his sixth in six games. This time his aggressive pressing allowed him to pick off an errant pass and he then coolly slotted it past the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, Aquino had a hard time getting involved otherwise and had just 25 touches in his 72 minutes.
Georgi Minoungou: He didn’t have much to show for his efforts, but Minoungou had SLC’s defenders on their heels all day. He was 5 of 6 dribbling, won 11 of 21 duels and was a little unlucky not to score, as his shot from a tight angle late in the first half got through the goalkeeper but was cleared off the line.
Kalani Kossa-Rienzi: The UW product put in another solid performance at right back, completing 39 of 47 passes, winning 7 of 10 duels and going 3 for 6 on tackles. He doesn’t seem to be quite as involved in the offense as he was early in the year but he’s probably the most consistent performer on a Defiance team that can be a bit erratic from one game to the next.
