Obed Vargas has received his first call-up to a Mexican national team since making his switch from the United States in June. The 19-year-old midfielder was one of 24 players called into Mexico’s U23 team for a training camp that will run from Sept. 1-9 and include two matches. Mexico will face Toluca on Sept. 6 and then Panama's U23 team on Sept. 10.
Vargas current has 2 goals and seven assists across all competitions for the Sounders.
As a result of the call-up, he will miss the Sounders’ match against the Columbus Crew on Sept. 7. The Sounders had originally been scheduled to have that weekend off, but the match was moved after the Crew qualified for the Concacaf Champions Cup final.
The Crew are also expected to be missing several players, including forward Cucho Hernandez (Colombia), goalkeeper Patrick Schulte (United States) and right back Mo Farsi (Algeria).
