Reign extend Sam Meza, loan her to Dallas
Seattle Reign announced on Thursday that they have exercised the 2025 contract option for midfielder Sam Meza while also loaning her to the USL Super League’s Dallas Trinity for an undisclosed fee. Meza will be with the Texas club for the remainder of 2024.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Sam to get increased game exposure at the professional level and continue to progress as a player,” said general manager Lesle Gallimore in a team release. “We’re confident that this chapter will help her develop and prepare her for the 2025 NWSL season.”
Meza, a Dallas native, was selected 17th overall by the Reign in the 2024 NWSL Draft. After struggling with some injuries and other setbacks early in the season, she made her Reign debut as a second-half sub in the opening game of the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup against Utah and started the game against Tijuana.
The USL Super League is a new first-division U.S. women’s league which kicks off its debut season in mid-August and will play a fall-to-spring schedule. The league primarily features a mix of fringe NWSL talent – younger players who have not quite broken through with NWSL clubs, as well as older American players who previously might have gone to overseas leagues to extend their careers. Some former Reign players in the league include Amber Brooks (Dallas), Taylor Smith (Brooklyn), Marley Canales (Spokane), Jodi Ülkekul (Spokane), Mia Corbin (Carolina), Adelaide Gay (DC Power), and Mariah Lee (DC), as well as 2024 draft pick Makenna Carr (Spokane) and training camp invitee Giana Gourley (Fort Lauderdale). USL Super League matches will stream on Peacock.
Meza joins the Kansas City Current's Sophie Braun as the second NWSL player loaned to a USL Super League club.
