The Seattle Sounders will face Pumas UNAM in a rematch of the 2022 Concacaf Champions League finals tonight, this time in the Leagues Cup Round of 16. The Sounders got here after finishing second in their group and topping the LA Galaxy 3-1 in the Round of 32, while Pumas were second in their group and then beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 in the previous round.
Pumas have gotten off to a flying start in Liga MX play, going 3-0-1 in the first four matches of the Apertura.
They’ve done it with a roster that is almost completely turned over since they last faced the Sounders. No one who played in their game against the Whitecaps started either of the CCL final legs and only a handful of players on the roster even remain.
Leading the way for Pumas on offense are their wingers, Jorge Ruvalcalba and Cesar Huerta. Each have two goals in Liga MX play this year and scored against the Whitecaps.
Notes
- Raúl Ruidíaz has seven goals in six career appearances against Pumas, five of which came while he was playing for Morelia in Liga MX. He is expected to be available.
- Jordan Morris (78) is one goal shy of catching Fredy Montero (79) for second on the Sounders’ all-time scoring list.
- The winner of this game will play the winner of LAFC-Earthquakes, most likely on Aug. 16-17. If the Sounders win, they’ll host that match.
