With a chance to clinch a playoff spot with a regulation win, the Tacoma Defiance came up a little short and were forced to settle for a single point after giving up a late equalizer and falling in the penalty shootout with Real Monarchs on Friday.

After a scoreless first half, the Defiance took the lead when Cody Baker found Gio Miglietti for a tap-in and a 1-0 lead. The Defiance had a couple good chances to expand their lead, but the Monarch struck next when Zavier Gozo hit a looping shot that was just outside of Mo Shour’s reach.

Key performers

Mo Shour: The 16-year-old goalkeeper got his second consecutive start and looked reasonably sharp again. The only goal he allowed came on a bit of a fluky touch that probably took a deflection. Otherwise, he commanded his box well and came up with a couple of big saves when the Monarchs got behind the Defiance defense. He was also clean with his passing, completing 15 of 18 passes. If there was a criticism to make of Shour it’s that he didn’t look particularly confident in the shootout, but that’s probably asking a bit much at this point. He appears to have a very bright future ahead of him.

Braudilio Rodrigues: As good as Brau looked in his previous game, he was mostly pretty invisible in this one. He did have one bright moment, when he made a nice move to open up some space for either an open shot or even an easy pass to Miglietti at the back post. He seemed to get a little caught between, as his shot was either a bit wide or his pass was a little heavy. Brau then had his penalty saved on a pretty weak attempt to seal the result. The good news is that he was able to log 10 more minutes than the last game.

Cody Baker: It has been a little bit of a lost year for Baker who has struggled to get consistent playing time mostly through no real fault of his own. This was his second appearance since returning from wrist surgery and it was a good reminder that he still has a lot of potential. Baker got up and down the line well from the right back position and made a very nice play to set up the Defiance’s goal. He went 71 minutes and mostly kept his side of the field reasonably locked down.
