Seattle Reign FC announced Monday afternoon that it had acquired defender Hanna Glas from Kansas City Current in exchange for $10,000 in intra-league transfer funds. If certain performance-based incentives are achieved, Kansas City will receive an additional $10,000 in intra-league transfer funds.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Reign. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be a part of a high-level club with such a talented group. I can’t wait to start this new chapter and give my all for the club and the fans," Glas said in a club press release.

Glas came to Kansas City in 2023 from Bayern Munich in Germany. At Bayern, she played 40 matches, including the 2021 UEFA Champions League semifinal against Chelsea, where she got an assist and scored the game-winning goal in the opening match of the two-game series.

The 31-year-old made just one appearance with the Current after recovering from her fourth ACL injury, which saw her miss the start of Bayern's 2022/23 season before transferring to Kansas City. She featured in a Summer Cup match this July, playing 68 minutes in a 3-0 win against Pachuca and assisting the opening goal.

While her four ACL tears have caused setbacks, Glas has been a mainstay on the Swedish national team. She began playing internationally with Sweden's U-17 team in 2009, helped Sweden win the UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship in 2012, and made her senior team debut in 2017. She has 60 senior caps and played a key role in Sweden's third-place finish in the 2019 Women's World Cup.

"We are pleased to announce the addition of Hanna Glas to the club. Her club and international experience provide the depth we currently need in our squad as we continue our push to make the playoffs. Despite suffering multiple setbacks from injury during her career, Hanna has shown resilience in her ability to get back to top form and compete at our level with quality," said Reign FC General Manager Lesle Gallimore in the club's press announcement.

Glas had hoped to return for the 2023 World Cup last summer, but a loose piece of bone in her knee stopped that comeback. Glas recently subbed into a Euro qualifier for Sweden, earning her first minutes with the national team since 2022.

Glas also helped Sweden earn a Silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She started two matches in the group stage, assisting in Sweden's 3-0 group-stage win against the U.S. She also started the quarterfinal, semifinal, and final.

Glas was one of the world's best fullbacks when healthy, and she's versatile enough to play on both sides of the pitch. As an attacking fullback at Bayern, she averaged 0.38 goals + assists per 90 minutes. Having missed most of the last two years, it's hard to predict how much of an impact she can have with the Reign. However, after Ryanne Brown's injury, Glas adds veteran depth to the backline.

Before joining Bayern in 2020, Glas played 19 matches with France’s Paris Saint-Germain. She started her professional career in 2011, playing for Sundsvalls DFF in Sweden’s second division. She quickly moved up to the Damallsvenskan, Sweden’s first division, with Umeå IK and then Eskilstuna United.

Seattle Reign FC's next match is a Friday night match in Los Angeles to face Angel City FC for their first regular season meeting in 2024.
