The Seattle Sounders will try to continue their hot run of form when they host the last-place San Jose Earthquakes tonight. The Sounders have gone 9-2-1 in their last 12 league games to move up to fifth in the Western Conference, while the Earthquakes have claimed just seven points in their last 16 games (2-1-13) and are already eliminated from postseason contention.
The Sounders are coming off a 2-0 win over Sporting KC on Sunday. The Earthquakes are coming off a 2-0 loss on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday and stayed in the Pacific Northwest.
The Earthquakes won the first meeting between these teams in March, 3-2.
Notes
- The Earthquakes, who fired head coach Luchi Gonzalez earlier this year, are being managed by interim head coach Ian Russell. Russell is a Seattle native who played four seasons at the University of Washington (where he was teammates with Craig Waibel) and spent two years with the USL-era Sounders from 1998-99. He is just the second Seattle native to coach against the Sounders in MLS play, joining former Rapids coach Anthony Hudson.
- This will be the decisive match in the Heritage Cup, an annual competition that is meant to honor the clubs’ shared NASL roots. With the first game being decided by one goal, the trophy will effectively be decided by total aggregate score, with the first tiebreaker being away goals.
- As part of the ongoing celebration of the club’s 50th anniversary, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado will be honored before the game.
