Obed Vargas apparently made a pretty good impression on the Mexican national team coaches during his recent call-up to the U23 team, as the 19-year-old has now received a call-up the the senior team for the upcoming international window. Adding a bit of intrigue, Mexico will be playing the United States at Chivas’ Estadio Akron.

This is the first time that an active Sounder has been called up Mexico’s senior national team. Gonzalo Pineda made 45 appearances for Mexico, but all came before he played for Seattle.

If Vargas plays, he’d also joins a short list of MLS Academy graduates to earn a Mexico cap. Efrain Alvarez, who came through the LA Galaxy Academy, has five caps with Mexico. Alejandro Zendejas, who has since switched to the United States, also played for Mexico after coming through the FC Dallas Academy.

Vargas would also become the youngest player to earn a senior cap while playing for the Sounders. Although Jordan Morris made his USMNT debut at 19, he was actually not yet a member of the Sounders.
