The Seattle Sounders finish the regular season on a seven-game unbeaten run and having one 12-2-3 over the second half, but head into the playoffs on a bit of a down note after tying the Portland Timbers 1-1 on Saturday. Yeimar Gomez Andrade scored to give the Sounders a first-half lead and were mostly dominating play until the Timbers got out on a counter-attack, setting up Antony’s equalizer. Obed Vargas was then shown a second yellow for dissent and the two teams traded blows before ultimately settling for a tie, which allowed the Timbers to claim the Cascadia Cup.

Quotes

Brian Schmetzer

On tonight’s result against Portland:

“Full room in here. Thank you. Full room. Full stadium. So, thanks [to] all the fans. I think everybody is frustrated. Everybody is super frustrated. This was as good a chance as any to end that streak, certainly against a lively home crowd with Cascadia Cup on the line, and super disappointed about not being able to bring that to our fans. You know, what can I say? Game unfolded in a certain manner. I thought we were in control of the game, and things, you know, just didn't end up in our favor. It is a loss, by the way. It is a complete loss.”

Stefan Frei

On what he thought the positives were for this match:

“I thought we had a good game, I thought we had a good first half. I thought we came out really well. We had a good mix in terms of possession, in terms of how we played direct. I thought we were in control of the game. [We] won the first half, it was great. The goal at halftime was then to come out and win the second half and I thought we started out pretty decent, I thought in good control of the match. Then they scored that goal, which is a bit unfortunate. I think we are going to look at that… we get countered on and they upgrade their shot twice, things we need to get better at. Another positive, I think, is that we go down a man and are pushing and are playing better and wanted it more than our opponent, who’s up one man. There’s some positives.”

Yeimar Gomez Andrade

On his goal:

“During the week we have been training a lot with Andy [Rose] on those types of situations. We’ve been working hard with him, but unfortunately during the game, I’m happy that I scored the goal, but we didn’t get the points we needed.”
