WHITECAPS 0, SOUNDERS 2: Albert Rusnák converts a penalty that was drawn by Paul Rothrock, his ninth goal of the season.
WHITECAPS 0, SOUNDERS 1: Georgi Minoungou scored his first MLS goal, tapping in a shot off his groin after Jordan Morris put it on a platter for him off a header.
LINEUPS: The Sounders are rolling out virtually the same lineup they used in Saturday’s win over the Houston Dynamo with the exception of Georgi Minoungou in Pedro de la Vega’s spot. The Whitecaps, meanwhile, made three changes from the weekend. They are also missing Designated Players Stuart Armstrong and Ryan Gauld, as well as Canada international Ali Ahmed.
Rarely has a match between the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps had more on the line than tonight’s meeting. In addition to being a pivotal match in the Cascadia Cup, the rivals are both locked in a battle for home-field advantage for the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The two teams are separated by just three points in the Western Conference standings.
As things stand now, the Whitecaps can clinch the Cascadia Cup with a win. The Sounders, who have one more Cascadia Cup match remaining, will need to win this game to keep their hopes of claiming the regional trophy alive.
Both teams are coming off weekend matches and will be on short rest. The Sounders beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0, while the Whitecaps tied the Portland Timbers 1-1.
The Whitecaps’ fixture congestion is a bit more intense, though, as this will be their sixth match in 18 days. They’ve gone 1-1-3 in the previous five, which includes a shootout win over Toronto FC in the Canadian Championship. The Sounders, meanwhile, have only played three matches in the same time.
