Reign waive Weinert, have 8 free agents
Tuesday was roster decision day for the NWSL, with teams announcing the contract status of all players ahead of a waiver wire which will open on Wednesday. Seattle Reign announced that they have waived forward McKenzie Weinert, who is currently on loan to Spokane Zephyr of the USL Super League.
Eight other Reign players are out of contract and eligible for free agency – goalkeepers Laurel Ivory and Maia Perez, defender Lauren Barnes, midfielders Olivia Athens, Maddie Mercado, Quinn and Nikki Stanton, and forward Tziarra King. The club did not indicate if it is currently in negotiations with any of them to return next season.
With the signing of free agent Madison Curry last week, the club has 22 players under contract for 2025, including three players currently on loan to other leagues. Midfielder Sam Meza’s loan to Dallas Trinity finishes at the end of this month, defender Lily Woodham’s loan to Crystal Palace ends in January, and defender Sofia Huerta’s loan to Olympique Lyonnais runs through June 2025. Each is expected to return to the Reign upon the completion of their respective loans.
Following the end of the waiver wire on Thursday, an intra-league trade window re-opens through mid-January, and the international transfer window opens on January 28, 2025. Exact dates for the 2025 season have yet to be announced, but during her end-of-season remarks, Reign General Manager Lesle Gallimore indicated that preseason camp would likely begin around January 15.
