It’s been at least several years since the Seattle Sounders were even tenuously linked with anyone who could reasonably be called a “world-famous footballer.” With the Sounders playing in the Club World Cup this upcoming summer, however, that always seemed likely to change.
Right on cue, there’s a rumor from a reputable journalist that claims the Sounders have had “internal conversations” about the possibility of signing England international and Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford.
The report comes from GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs, who mentioned the Sounders as one of several potential landing spots for Rashford. While he notes the 27-year-old might not even be interested in the move, he suggests that both MLS and Apple could be inclined to help make the deal happen and that the team expressing some openness to it is the Sounders.
“They’ve had an internal conversation,” Jacobs told the YouTube channel mufcMPB. “The reason it’s Seattle is they are a Club World Cup representative which is of appeal to anyone they might be interested to sign and because of that they are to get a minimum of £40-£60 million for entering the Club World Cup. So MLS can turn around and say you can suddenly afford to pay for these stars. Budget might not be a problem.”
In addition to sort of hand-waving the potential cost, Jacobs is also quick to note that no formal overtures have been made.
