Sounders renew partnership with J.League’s Vissel Kobe
Renewing a relationship that first started in 1995, the Seattle Sounders announced a new cultural, business and sporting partnership with J.League club Vissel Kobe on Thursday. The partnership will include collaboration on player development, scouting and squad management as well various marketing elements.
The Sounders and Vissel Kobe first partnered in 1995 by playing two friendlies —one in Japan and one in Seattle —with the hope of raising awareness and funds for relief efforts following the devastating Great Hanshin earthquake. Seattle and Kobe have also been sister cities since 1957.
“The bond between our two clubs and cities has always been one of special significance,” said Sounders majority owner Adrian Hanauer said in a team statement. “As we approach the 30th anniversary of our partnership, it felt like the right time to renew our commitment to one another and explore new opportunities for collaboration. This partnership transcends soccer – it’s about global community, shared values and mutual respect.”
Among the first tangible pieces of the partnership is Vissel Kobe loaning 18-year-old centerback Kaito Yamada to the Tacoma Defiance for the 2025 MLS Next Pro season.
The two clubs are planning to further realize the partnership through friendlies, youth camps and joint charitable events.
Although not a traditional Japanese power, Vissel Kobe are the two-time reigning J.League champions. They also went 4-1-1 in AFC Champions League Elite play to advance to the Round of 16 which resumes in March.
