New MLS data reveals Sounders have significant cap flexibility

Sounders have more than $1.1 million of available GAM.

Newly released data from MLS has revealed that the Seattle Sounders enter the 2025 season with a little less than $1.2 million in available General Allocation Money. The latest revelation comes as MLS has been making strides to make the inner-workings of the salary cap more transparent, adding each team’s available GAM to its roster profiles. Notably, the league’s official tally closely mirrors Sounder at Heart’s estimate, which was only $40,000 off.

Although some of the money will likely be rolled into 2026 to help balance next year’s cap, the Sounders should still have more than enough to add at least two more U22 players. The Sounders also have the option of borrowing as much as $1.25 million of GAM from their 2026 and 2027 budgets, but they’ve expressed little appetite for that.

The Sounders rank roughly in the middle of the league in terms of available GAM, having the 13th most. New York City FC, who recently transferred Santi Rodriguez, have the most at $4.2 million. They are one of only two teams — along with expansion San Diego FC — who have at least $4 million; there are four more teams with at least $3 million; and two more that have at least $2 million.

On the other end of the spectrum, the LA Galaxy are the only team who is completely tapped out with $0 available GAM, and FC Cincinnati is effectively no better off with $6,452. The New England Revolution, who started the offseason with the second most GAM, have spent the most and now have about $350,000 remaining. Atlanta United, who started with the most, still have about $1.1 million despite making several big additions.
