St. Louis City vs. Sounders: Gamethread

ST. LOUIS 1, SOUNDERS 0: Following a regrettable handball in which Jackson Ragen simply slipped, Eduard Lowen bent a free kick over the wall for the early lead.

LINEUPS: The Sounders will make three changes following Tuesday’s Concacaf Champions Cup loss, with Jesús Ferreira getting his first start at the No. 9.

St. Louis City have been defensive team through the first three weeks of the MLS season, having not allowed a goal despite playing two matches on the road. Olof Mellberg has done this with a defense that is a bit more content to lure opponents in than punch them in the face.

The Sounders have been mostly treading water in league play, going 1-1-1 while juggling Concacaf Champions Cup. But after getting eliminated from the tournament on Tuesday, can focus all their energy on the league.

This week, they’ll need to do it while a bit short-handed, though. Paul Arriola suffered a torn ACL against Cruz Azul, while Jordan Morris and Pedro de la Vega picked up muscle injuries that will keep them out for the next few weeks. Yeimar Gomez Andrade will also miss the game while dealing with a personal matter in Colombia.

Notes

  • St. Louis has scored an own-goal in all four meetings with the Sounders. Two of those were scored by Tim Parker — who is no longer with St. Louis — which makes him the leading scorer in the series.
  • With his next appearance, Cristian Roldan will set the Sounders’ record for all-competition appearances in club history by a field player. He’s currently tied with Zach Scott on 352. Stefan Frei leads among all players.
  • If Brian Schmetzer does not coach, that responsibility will likely fall to Freddy Juarez, who coached 55 matches at Real Salt Lake from 2019-2021.
