Despite grabbing an early lead off a penalty and playing up a man for about 30 minutes, the Tacoma Defiance fell 3-2 to LAFC2 on Thursday. Osaze DeRosario scored a pair of goals for the Defiance, but LAFC2 scored two goals while down a man and then got a late winner off a penalty.
The Defiance seemed to be in control through the first 40 minutes or so after DeRosario converted a penalty. But Yu Tsukanome got kicked in the head and had to leave the match around the 38th minute. Marius Aiyenero was eventually shown a red card on that play.
But the Defiance struggled to find any rhythm after that. LAFC took advantage with two goals just four minutes apart early in the second half. Although DeRosario managed to grab an equalizer in the 56th minute, the Defiance were dealt another blow when Leo Burney was red-carded just nine minutes after entering the match. The match seemed destined for penalties until Danny Robles made an ill-advised tackle in the 88th minute that led to the game-winning penalty.
The Defiance will next play Oakland Roots in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday.
