The Tacoma Defiance will play arguably the biggest game in their history tonight when they host the USL Championship’s Oakland Roots in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup at Starfire Stadium. The game will air on Paramount+ and is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 PM. The winner will likely get a chance to face a MLS team in the fourth round of the tournament.
The Defiance come into the match off a 3-2 loss to LAFC2, but had won four straight across all competitions prior to that. To get to this point they had to beat Washington Athletic Club and USL League One side Spokane Velocity in the previous rounds. They have scored at least two goals in each of their six matches this year.
This will be the Roots’ first match in the Open Cup, having qualified based on last year’s USL Championship performance. They’re off to a rough start so far this year in league play, having gone 1-4-1, albeit winning their previous game against FC Tulsa.
