With the Seattle Sounders’ season suddenly hanging in the balance, they’ll face the top statistical team in the league in the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Sounders can theoretically clinch a playoff spot, though, if a win is combined with a Portland Timbers’ loss. There is also some precedent, as the Sounders beat the Whitecaps 3–0 at BC Place in Concacaf Champions Cup play earlier this year.
Here’s what you need to know:

Injury news
Sounders
OUT: Pedro de la Vega — Quad; Yeimar Gómez Andrade — Hamstring; Nikola Petković — Knee
QUESTIONABLE: Danny Musovski — Head
Whitecaps
OUT: Jeevan Badwal — Hamstring; Kenji Cabrera — Foot; Andrés Cubas — Ankle; Rayan Elloumi — Suspended; Belal Halbouni — Knee; Emmanuel Sabbi — Ankle
Opposition players to watch
- Thomas Müller: The German legend hasn’t been quite as explosive as he was in his first season, but with nine goals and six assists in less than 1,700 minutes he remains the player through which much of the Whitecaps’ offense runs.
- Ryan Gauld: Since returning from a lengthy absence, the midfielder has slowly started to look like his old self. He’s been particularly good in the last three games where he has two goals.
Stats to look smart
0 – The Sounders have yet to claim a point in any of their previous three Cascadia Cup matches. They are trying to avoid becoming the first team to do that during the MLS era of the regional competition. Conversely, the Whitecaps are attempting to become the first team to win all their Cascadia Cup matches.
+28.8 – The Whitecaps’ +28.8 xGD is more than 10 higher than any other team and 16.4 higher than Supporters’ Shield-winning Nashville SC.
Tactics to impress
- The Whitecaps are one of the hardest pressing and highest-possession teams in the league, a brutal combination that is capable of suffocating opponents either with or without the ball.
- The Sounders will likely drop their lines of confrontation and look to spring Jordan Morris on the counter, but can’t afford to fall into a shell.
